Dave helps Kek get settled in, and then Kek is left with the awkwardness of facing family members whom he no longer feels he knows well. Futh may pick up an item or smell a certain smell and he is drawn back in time, ultimately, relaying his memories and demonstrating how they constantly reassert themselves in his present state. This creates a stream of consciousness like feel to some parts of the book. Instead of living in the now and making the most of what we do have the human mind always seeks such impossibilities. ![]() ![]() It’s also about futility and the fruitless nature of such longing. And in this Moore provides an excellent case study in the characterisation of Futh, a man who embodies an extreme sense of loneliness.
